Laser cutting metal logos and lettering: what you need to know before you start

Laser cutting of logos, lettering, and metal visuals is increasingly in demand, for signs, decoration, furniture, communication materials, or architectural elements.

But behind a "seemingly simple" logo, there are real technical constraints.

Cut-out logos: why do some letters "fall out"?

When cutting a logo or text in metal, each element is completely detached from the material.
Problem: some letters or shapes contain enclosed interior parts.

Typical examples:

  • numbers (0, 4, 6, 8, 9)

👉 Without adaptation, the central parts fall out during cutting.

This is a normal constraint in laser cutting, but it must be anticipated from the design stage.

 

The solution: the stencil principle

To prevent interior parts from falling out, we use what is called a "stencil" type design.

The stencil consists of:

  • adding support bridges

  • connecting interior parts to the rest of the logo

  • maintaining readability while ensuring mechanical strength

A good stencil:

  • is discreet

  • respects the aesthetic of the logo

  • ensures a clean and usable cut

Not all logos can be cut directly

A logo designed for:

  • printing

  • the web

  • screen printing

❌ is not necessarily suitable for laser cutting.

Certain shapes:

  • are too thin

  • too complex

  • or mechanically fragile

👉 Logo cut-out + mounting on a backing

For example:

  • logo cut out in raw or powder-coated steel

  • brushed stainless steel or steel backing

  • invisible mounting or standoffs

Advantages:

  • no letters fall out

  • high-end finish

  • great graphic freedom

  • excellent durability

This is a widely used solution for:

  • signs

  • professional plaques

  • signage

  • wall decoration

Thickness, material, finish: crucial choices

A cut-out logo will not have the same rendering depending on:

  • the material (steel, stainless steel)

  • the thickness (1.5 mm, 3 mm, 5 mm...)

  • the finish (raw, painted, powder-coated, brushed stainless steel)

These choices influence:

  • rigidity

  • readability

  • weight

  • attachment

  • durability

👉 There is no "universal good solution", only the right solution for your specific use.

Is a DXF file absolutely necessary?

No.
