Table de soudure 6 mm d’épaisseur : bonne ou mauvaise idée ?

6mm thick welding table: good or bad idea?

6mm Welding Table: Good or Bad Idea?

When looking for a welding table, the first question that always comes up is: what thickness should I choose? 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, or 12mm?

At 4A Métal, we made the choice to design a complete range in 6mm pickled steel. A well-considered choice, suitable for workshops, craftsmen, independent welders, and enthusiasts who want something robust without falling into industrial excess.

⚙️ 1. Why 6mm is an excellent compromise

The 6mm tabletop offers the perfect balance between:

  • Rigidity and flatness: no flexing, even during clamping or spot welding.
  • Reasonable weight: transportable and manageable without heavy machinery.
  • Controlled cost: much cheaper to produce and ship than an 8mm or 10mm table.
  • Universal compatibility: Ø16mm hole pattern on a 50mm grid, European standard.

In other words, it's the perfect thickness for working seriously without breaking the bank.

🧰 2. Who is it for?

Our 6mm tables are perfectly suited for:

  • craftsmen and independent welders;
  • passionate DIYers setting up their workshops;
  • small businesses looking for reliable and durable equipment;
  • training schools or fablabs that prioritize modularity and safety.

This 6mm format is also very well suited for the production of accessories: extensions, stops, blocks, V-supports, etc. It offers the same precision but with simplified handling.

🧱 3. Its limitations: when to go thicker?

To be honest, a 6mm table is not intended for heavy boilermaking or parts exceeding 200kg. For these uses, 10mm to 20mm, or even thicker, tabletops will be more suitable.

But for 95% of a workshop's needs, 6mm is more than sufficient. Even with intensive clamping or a MIG/MAG station, the flatness remains stable, especially on our models with a 150mm edge.

🚀 4. What's next?

We are already preparing for the future: a premium range with 8, 10, and 12mm tabletops, intended for heavier workshops or industrial manufacturing. But the core of our philosophy will remain the same: French manufacturing, quality steel, precision, and accessibility.

🧩 In summary

  • ✅ 6mm = ideal compromise rigidity / weight / price;
  • ✅ perfect for craftsmen, DIYers, and workshops;
  • ✅ compatible Ø16mm / 50mm;
  • ✅ scalable: accessories, extensions, and modular blocks;
  • ⚙️ higher ranges coming soon for industrial use.
